John (Johnny) Hall

Johnny’s passion for music started when he was in the 8th grade back in June of 1962 when he acquired his first Radio Telephone Operator’s License from the FCC and became a member of the remote broadcast team from WZEV in Southside Virginia.  While Johnny did not stay in radio his love of music did not waver.  Over the years he has played the clarinet, saxophone, muset, and drums in a variety of bands from high school thru adult life with the Acca Shrine Oriental Band from Richmond, Va.  Although the musical genre varied greatly his love for Carolina Beach, R&B, and old time rock n roll stayed constant through the years.

Presently Johnny serves as Entertainment Director, Emcee, and Host DJ for the longest continuous running weekly outdoor concert series in Central Virginia. “Thursday In Old Towne” Petersburg, Virginia presents the very best live Carolina Beach music performed by the bands spread throughout Virginia, and North & South Carolina.  Johnny has played music for parties, weddings and clubs in Virginia, North & South Carolina down as far as Florida and West to Kentucky.

Johnny’s professional career outside of music included 25 years in the Virginia Army National Guard and US Army Reserve enlisting as a private and retiring at the rank of Major.  Johnny’s civilian career included a stint of 40 years in the tobacco industry retiring from Philip Morris USA in 2009.  Johnny has been married to his wife Phyllis for 37 years and they have two sons.

Johnny reports that one of his biggest thrills to date in music was being ask to DJ for “Boogie In The Bluegrass”.  Never has he seen a more friendly and fun loving group of people.  Johnny states that he cherishes the friendships developed here last year and looks forward to another great event this year.
